  • Introduction & Background

“Mustang” Legend:

In the Chinese theater, the first batch of early-model P-51 B Mustangs were stationed in Kunming, China, in 1943 and handed over to the United States Air Force in China (AVG, commonly known as the "Flying Tigers"). Later, in 1944, the Fourteenth Air Force, a Chinese-American mixed group, also began to use P-51B. In 1945, a large number of P-51Cs were delivered to the Chinese Air Force. With the arrival of the Mustang, the Chinese and American air forces gradually gained air supremacy over the Chinese battlefield, because almost none of the Japanese aircraft could be said to be a match for the Mustang. For this purpose, the Japanese army sent their most cutting-edge four-type fighter "Hast" to China. Go to war. Although Hayate was able to compete with the Mustang on an equal footing, its numbers were too small after all. Even though it briefly achieved a balance of power, it was ultimately defeated by the Mustang due to overwhelming numerical disadvantage. The last air battle between Mustangs and Japanese aircraft took place over Nanjing on May 31, 1945. The 16 Mustangs of the Chinese Air Force faced off against 30 Japanese three-type fighter jets, the Feiyans. The Mustangs took advantage of their speed and dived from high altitudes to attack, which turned into a unilateral aerial massacre. In the end, the Chinese Air Force defeated the larger number with less.

The P-51 fighter was one of the best all-round piston-powered fighters of the Allied Forces in World War II and a symbol of Allied air power. It shot down 4,950 enemy aircraft, accounting for 48.9% of the total number of U.S. Army Air Forces shot down over Europe, and destroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft. 4,131 ground targets were shot down, and more than 230 V-1 missiles were shot down, and even the most elite jet fighter of the Luftwaffe was shot down. Its functions and dimensions were comparable to those of the British Spitfire, the German BF-109 fighter, and the Japanese Zero fighter at the time.
