  • Introduction & Background
The P-40 Warhawk is a new fighter jet that combines the P-36 fighter body designed and produced by Curtiss with the V-1710-19 liquid-cooled engine developed by Allison Engine Company. . In terms of performance, the P-40 was mediocre compared to the performance of the Axis fighters in the early 1940s; however, it was born in time and became the only single-seat fighter that had entered the mass production stage when the United States officially entered the war in 1941. Therefore, in addition to In addition to the U.S. military's own use, a large amount of military aid was also provided to the Allied Powers for use, becoming a symbolic aircraft for the Allied forces in the early days of World War II. P-40 production ceased in November 1944. A total of 13,738 aircraft were produced, ranking third in U.S. fighter production records.
We have to talk about the unique "shark mouth" logo on its nose. With the beginning of the North African campaign, P-40s participated in the war for the first time in June 1941. The first batch of British Royal 112th Squadron to fly the "Tomahawk" painted "Shark Mouth" as the nose art on their P-40s. -40, making this logo a feature of the Allied aviation forces.
Although the P-40 was inferior to Luftwaffe fighters such as the Messerschmitt Bf-109 or Focke-Wulf Fw-190 in high-altitude combat, it was rarely used in operations in western and northern Europe. However, between 1941 and 1944, the P-40 played a key role in three major Allied theaters: North Africa, the Southwest Pacific, and China.
Although its design could be called mediocre, and was considered by the Allies during the war to be suitable only for close air support, postwar research, including a detailed review of Allied squadron records, found that this was not the case: P-40 Combat Performance Very good as an air superiority fighter, sometimes suffering heavy losses but also dealing very heavy blows to enemy aircraft. According to wartime statistics, more than 200 Allied P-40 fighter pilots from 7 different countries (England, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, the United States, and the Soviet Union) became flying aces, serving as fighters long after their performance had become obsolete. It was put into production again as a ground attack aircraft.
